*Style and Techniques
• His style somewhat complex and this due to his philosophical and rational nature. He uses the two kinds of
interrogation(rhetorical and interrogative) . Shaw's essays and plays are thoroughly infused with his lively tolerant
socially aware, and sharply critical personality. He is very convincing, he draws your attention and makes you his
patron by his direct, powerful and convincing speech.
• His main techniques are Irony, imagery and satire. He uses also the technique of redefinition.
•He uses figurative language.

Samuel Johnson

•He is analytic in categorizing (sort out) the books and the author.We feel it is a scientific way .
•He traced all the previous poets with critical insight and perspective

Johnson's letter to Lord Chesterfield

Johnson's tone in his letter*
• His tone is an serious, sometime mocking and hysterical but in control .
• My Lord is an example of ' in control '- Every sentence has a mitigators to mitigate the sharpness of the tone
• If he is harshly attacking without control, the satire will turn into nonsense inventive .

William Hazlitt

*Style :
•He has tough criticism, charming style maxim or aphoristic language, astonishing yet supportive and
finally his style is literate, educated, clear, and not ambiguous, a way of condensing, and sometime harshness.
• His style was aphoristic ' a compact and epigrammatic style of writing' like the style of Alexander Pope because
his language is very meet, short, expressive, dancing, musical, and balanced

John Milton

The writer and age
•Though John Milton is remembered mainly for his eloquent and powerful poetry, he was also a distinguished writer
of prose . He was a very religious, republican and puritan.
• Milton's vehement protest against in our day when this matter remains a subject for debate.

Tone and Intention
• His tone is very declamatory, satirical and vehement. This essay is objective.
• He calls in this essay for the freedom of unlicensed press and the freedom of ideas.

Style : John Milton has characteristic features of his own .
• He is deeply analytic and philosophic so his style is digressive.
• His style is Latinate (He uses the features of he Latin Language): We keep the predicate to the last
position of the sentence.
• His style is to somewhat complex. He uses analogy and extended metaphors or images
to convey his ideas in a very logical and objective way.

Daniel Defoe

The writer
•During his hectic life as businessman, politician and journalist, Defoe spoke out on an amazing number
of subjects .
•In An Essay Upon Projects he dealt with subjects as varied as the education of women, roads, banks,
jails, asylums, insurance even the income tax.
• Most of his life he was in and out of trouble because of his opinions, yet he was one of the most fearless
and prolific writers of his day.
• The plain and homely style he developed could hardly have been better suited to his needs, or closer
to what he described as the perfect style: that in which a man speaking to all people, of all common
and various capacities, should be understood by them all, Idiots and Lunatics expected.

Style
• He uses a wonderful style as we see in his novels. He uses homely style, a common and
undecorated style to convince the common people to be educated.
• He employed different tones, sometimes comparative, sometimes ironic, sometimes serious.
• He employs the inquiry(Interrogative) mood to stress the facts.

•Psychological analysis.
• Analogy and comparison between true friendship and false one.
•Use of parallelism.
