مجال لاقناع القتيل بالهرب.ان القتيل يسلم بموته المحتم وهو يجيب النادل
الذي ارسله صاحب المطعم لتحذيره: انا اعرف ذلك ولا فائدة من الهرب. القتلة
في هذه القصة مميزون وهادئون الى اقصى حد هم ارتكبوا جريمتهم في اعماقهم
قبل ان يشرعوا بالقتل الحقيقي.وبالتالي فان التداعيات التي يمكن ان تسبق
عملية القتل تنتهي كذلك اذ تحول القتيل او الضحية الى.قصة همنغواي تضعنا
في اطار الموقف المسمم الذي يجمع بين قاتل وقتيل وكأنه يريد اخبارنا عبر
سرده المنضبط بالاتجاه الدائري لسير التاريخ لا سيما انه لم يتطرق في قصته
الى دوافع القتلة او محاولة الضحية لتفادي قدره.

The door of Henry’s lunchroom opened and two men came in. They sat down at the counter .
فتح باب مطعم هنري للوجبات الخفيفة, ودخل إليه رجلان.
“What’s yours?” George asked them .
سأل جورج: "ماهو طلبكما؟"
“I don’t know,” one of the men said. “What do you want to eat, Al ?”
"مإذا تريد ان تأكل يا آل؟" . قال أحد الرجلين: "لا أعرف
“I don’t know,” said Al. “I don’t know what I want to eat .”
قال آل: :" لا أعرف." "لا أعرف مإذا أريد ان أكل؟."
Outside it was getting dark. The streetlight came on
outside the window. The two men at the counter read the menu. From the
other end of the counter Nick Adams watched them. He had been talking
to George when they came in .
أصبح الظلام في الخارج دامساً، وبدت أضواء
الشارع تتسلل عبر النافذة. قرأ الرجلان الواقفان على المنضدة قائمة
الطعام.ومن الجانب الآخر للمنضدة شاهدهم نيك آدمز, حيث كان ينحدث مع جورج
حينما دخل الرجلان.
“I’ll have a roast pork tenderloin with apple sauce and mashed potatoes,” the first man said .
قال آل:الرجل الأول:" انا أريد لحم خنزيرمشوي مع صلصة التفاح وبطاطس مهروسة."
“It isn’t ready yet .”
"ليست جاهزة الآن."
“What the hell do you put it on the card for ?”
الطعام ؟" "لمإذا بحق الجحيم تضعها على قائمة
“That’s the dinner,” George explained. “You can get that at six o’clock .”
قال جورج:: "هذه وجبة الغداء" بإمكانك تناولها الساعة السادسة .
George looked at the clock on the wall behind the counter .
نظر جورج إلى الساعة المعلقة على الجدار خلف المنضدة.
“It’s five o’clock .”
"انها الخامسة"
“The clock says twenty minutes past five,” the second man said .
قال الرجل الثاني: " الساعة تشير إلى الخامسة والعشرين دقيقة"
“It’s twenty minutes fast .”
"مضت عشرون دقيقة بسرعة"
“Oh, to hell with the clock,” the first man said. “What have you got to eat ?”
الرجل الأول: "آه, إلى الجحيم هذه الساعة"." مإذا تريد ان تأكل؟"
“I can give you any kind of sandwiches,” George said. “You can have ham and eggs, bacon and eggs, liver and bacon, or a steak .”

“That’s the dinner .”
"هذه وجبة الغداء."
“Everything we want’s the dinner, eh? That’s the way you work it .”
"كل شيء نطلبه هو الغداء, هاه؟ هل هذه االطريقة التي تعمل بها.
“I can give you ham and eggs, bacon and eggs, liver —”
"بإمكاني إعطاءك لحم الخنزير مع البيض, لحم الخنزير المقدد , أو كبده"
“I’ll take ham and eggs,” the man called Al said. He wore
a derby hat and a black overcoat buttoned across the chest. His face
was small and white and he had tight lips. He wore a silk muffler and
gloves .
قال الرجل الذي يدعى آل:" أريد لحم الخنزير مع
البيض" كان هذا الرجل لابسا قبعة لبّادية مستديرة ومعطف أسود مزرر حتى
صدرة.كان وجهه صغيراً وأبيض ولدية شفتان غليظتان.وأيضا كان يلبس لفحة
حريرية و قفازات.
“Give me bacon and eggs,” said the other
man. He was about the same size as Al. Their faces were different, but
they were dressed like twins. Both wore overcoats too tight for them.
They sat leaning forward, their elbows on the counter .
قال الرجل الآخر :" أعطني لحم الخنزير المقدد
والبيض" كان هذا الرجل بنفس حجم آل تقريبا. لكن وجوههما مختلفة , وكانا
يلببسان كانهما توأمين. كلاهما يلبس معطفاً ضيقاً.جلسا بانحناء للأمام
ومرفقاهما على المنضدة.
“Got anything to drink?” Al asked .
سأل آل:" هل تريدان أن تشربا شيئا؟"
“Silver beer, bevo, ginger-ale,” George said .
"بيرا فضية و بيفو و مشروب الزنجبيل(غير كحولي)" : قال جورج
“I mean you got anything to drink ?”
"أقصد هل تريدان أي شيء للشرب؟"
“Just those I said .”
"هذا ما قلته"
“This is a hot town,” said the other. “What do they call it ?”
قال الرجل الآخر: "الحرارة مرتفعة في هذه البلدة , مإذا يطلقون عليها؟"
“Summit .”
"القمة"
“Ever hear of it?” Al asked his friend .
سأل آل: صديقه: "هل سمعت بها".
“No,” said the friend .
قال صديقه:"لا".
“What do they do here nights?” Al asked .
سأل آل: :" مإذا يفعلون هنا بالليل؟
“They eat the dinner,” his friend said. “They all come here and eat the big dinner .”
قال صديقه:" يتناولون الطعام ,كلهم يأتون إلى هنا ويتناولون غداء دسما."
“That’s right,” George said .
قال جورج: "هذا صحيح"
“So you think that’s right?” Al asked George .
سأل آل جورج :" أتعتقد ان ذلك صحيحا؟"
“Sure .”
"بالتأكيد"
“You’re a pretty bright boy, aren’t you ?”
"أنت ولد ذكي وحاذق, أليس كذلك؟"
“Sure,” said George .
قال جورج:. "بالتأكيد"
“Well, you’re not,” said the other little man. “Is he, Al ?”
"حسنا, أنت ليس كذلك,أليس كذلك , آل؟"
“He’s dumb,” said Al. He turned to Nick. “What’s your name ?”
قال آل: "انه أبكم". والتفت إلى نيك."ما اسمك؟
“Adams .”
"آدمز"
“Another bright boy,” Al said. “Ain’t he a bright boy, Max ?”
قال آل: "ولد ذكي آخر , أليس ولد ذكي يا ماكس؟"
“The town’s full of bright boys,” Max said .
قال ماكس:" البلدة مليئة بالأولاد الأذكياء"
George put the two platters, one of ham and eggs, the
other of bacon and eggs, on the counter. He set down two side dishes of
fried potatoes and closed the wicket into the kitchen .
وضع جورج الصحنين الأاول لحم الخنزير مع البيض
والثاني لحم الخنزير المقدد مع البيض على المنضدة, ووضع بجانبهما صحنين من
البطاطا المقليةوقربهما من خلال النافذة الصغيرة في المطبخ.
“Which is yours?” he asked Al .
سأل آل: " أي منهما صحنك؟"
“Don’t you remember ?”
"ألا تتذكر؟"
“Ham and eggs .”
"لحم الخنزير والبيض"
“Just a bright boy,” Max said. He leaned forward and took
the ham and eggs. Both men ate with their gloves on. George watched
them eat .
"بالفعل ولد ذكي" قال ماكس:.انحنى للامام واخذ لحم الخنزير والبيض.كلاهما يأكل وهو لابس القفازات. شاهدهما جورج وهم يأكلان.
“What are you looking at?” Max looked at George .
نظر ماكس جورج" مإذا تريدان؟"
“Nothing .”
"لا شيء"
“The hell you were. You were looking at me .”
"لمإذا تنظر إلى بحق الجحيم"
“Maybe the boy meant it for a joke, Max,” Al said .
قال آل:" ربما الرجل يمزح"
George laughed .
ضحك جورج
“You don’t have to laugh,” Max said to him. “You don’t have to laugh at all, see ?’
قال له ماكس: "لا يجب أن تضحك, كان يجب ألا تضحك ابدا,أليس كذلك؟"
“All right,” said George .
قال جورج:"حسنا"
“So he thinks it’s all right.” Max turned to Al. “He thinks it’s all right. That’s a good one .”
التفت إلى آل "إذا يعتقد ان ذلك جيدا,إذا يعتقد ان ذلك جيدا. هذا رجل جيد."
“Oh, he’s a thinker,” Al said. They went on eating .
قال آل :"آه, انه مفكر" ثم تابعوتناول طعامهم.
“What’s the bright boy’s name down the counter?” Al asked Max .
سأل ماكس :" ما أسم الرجل الذكي الذي يجلس خلف المنضدة"
“Hey, bright boy,” Max said to Nick. “You go around on the other side of the counter with your boy friend .”
"أنت أيها الولد الذكي" قال ماكس: لنيك." اذهب أنت وصديقك حول الجانب الآخر من المنضدة."
“What’s the idea?” Nick asked .
سأل نيك:" ما هي المشكلة؟"
“There isn’t any idea .”
"لا يوجد هناك أية مشكلة."
“You better go around, bright boy,” Al said. Nick went around behind the counter .
" من الأافضل أن تذهب حول المنضدة أيها الولد الذكي"
“What’s the idea?” George asked .
سأل جورج :" ما المشكلة؟"
“None of your damned business,” Al said. “Who’s out in the kitchen ?”
قال آل: " هذا لا يعنيك ,من خرج من المطبخ؟"
“The nigger .”
"الزنجي"
“What do you mean the nigger ?”
"مإذا تعني بالزنجي؟"
“The nigger that cooks .”
" الزنجي الطباخ"
“Tell him to come in .”
"أطلب منه أن يأتي"
“What’s the idea ?”
"ما المشكلة؟"
“Tell him to come in .”
"أاخبره أن يأتي"
“Where do you think you are ?”
"أين تعتقد أنك جالس؟"
“We know damn well where we are,” the man called Max said. “Do we look silly ?”
قال الرجل الذي يدعى ماكس. "نحن بحق الجحيم نعرف أين نجلس، هل نبدو ساذجين؟"
“You talk silly,” A1 said to him. “What the hell do you
argue with this kid for? Listen,” he said to George, “tell the nigger
to come out here .”
قال له آل: " أنت تتحدث بسذاجة"ثم قال لجورج:" ماالذي تتجادل به مع هذا الولد بحق الجحيم؟"
“What are you going to do to him ?”
"ما الذي ستفعله له؟"
“Nothing. Use your head, bright boy. What would we do to a nigger ?”
" لا شيء, استخدم ذكاءك أيها الولد الذكي.مإذا سنفعل بالزنجي؟"
George opened the slit that Opened back into the kitchen. “Sam,” he called. “Come in here a minute .”
فتح جورج شق الباب الذي يفتح للخلف في المطبخ. ونادى: " جون تعال دقيقة إلى هنا؟"
The door to the kitchen opened and the nigger came in. “What was it?” he asked. The two men at the counter took a look at him .
فتح باب المطبخ وخرج منه الزنجي وسأل: " مإذا هنالك؟"نظر إليه الرجلان الجالسان على المنضدة.
“All right, nigger. You stand right there,” Al said .
قال آل: " حسنا أيها الزنجي. أنت تقف أمامنا".
Sam, the nigger, standing in his apron, looked at the two
men sitting at the counter. “Yes, sir,” he said. Al got down from his
stool .
وقف الزنجي سام بمأزره ونظر إلى الرجلين الذين يجلسان على المنضدة وقال." نعم سيدي". نزل آل من على الكرسي.
“I’m going back to the kitchen with the nigger and bright
boy,” he said. “Go on back to the kitchen, nigger. You go with him,
bright boy.” The little man walked after Nick and Sam, the cook, back
into the kitchen. The door shut after them. The man called Max sat at
the counter opposite George. He didn’t look at George but looked in the
mirror that ran along back of the counter. Henry’s had been made over
from a saloon into a lunch counter .
قال: " أنا ذاهب إلى المطبخ برفقة الرجل الذكي
والزنجي" ارجع إلى المطبخ أيها الزنجي. بإمكانك الذهاب معه أيها الولد
الذكي." ذهب الرجل ضئيل البنية خلف نيك وسام (الطباخ) إلى المطبخ. أغلق
الباب خلفهما. نادى الرجل ماكس الذي يجلس على الجهة المعاكسة لجورج على
المنضدة. لم ينظر إلى جورج ولكنه كان ينظر في المرآة الموجودة على طول
المنضدة من الخلف. وكان هنري خارجا من الصالون إلى منضدة الطعام.
“Well, bright boy,” Max said, looking into the mirror, “why don’t you say something ?”
قال ماكس: وهو ينظر في المرآة" حسنا أيها الولد الذكي, لمإذا لم تقل شيئا؟"
“What’s it all about ?”
"عن مإذا؟"
“Hey, Al,” Max called, “bright boy wants to know what it’s all about .”
نادى ماكس: " هيه, آل الولد الذكي يريد أن يعرف ماهي المشكلة"
“Why don’t you tell him?” Al’s voice came from the kitchen .
جاء صوت آل من المطبخ "لمإذا لا تخبره؟"
“What do you think it’s all about ?”
"ماهي المشكلة أصلا برأيك؟"
“I don’t know .”
" لا أعرف"
“What do you think ?”
"مإذا تعتقد؟"
Max looked into the mirror all the time he was talking .
كان ماكس ينظر في المرآة أثناء كلامه.
“I wouldn’t say .”
" لن أقول"
“Hey, Al, bright boy says he wouldn’t say what he thinks it’s all about .”
"هيه آل ، الولد الذكي لا يريد أن يقول مإذا يعتقد؟"
“I can hear you, all right,” Al said from the kitchen. He
had propped open the slit that dishes passed through into the kitchen
with a catsup bottle. “Listen, bright boy,” he said from the kitchen to
George. “Stand a little further along the bar. You move a little to the
left, Max.” He was like a photographer arranging for a group picture .
"قال آل: وهو في المطبخ , أنا لا أسمعك جيدا".
دفع الباب الصغير الذي تخرج منه الصحون بزجاجة الكاتشب ليفتحه. و قال
لجورج من المطبخ: "اسمع أيها الولد الذكي: قف إلى جانب البار. وأنت تحرك
قليلا إلى أليسار يا ماكس."بدا كأنه مصور فوتوغرافي يريد أن يلتقط صورة .
“Talk to me, bright boy,” Max said. “What do you think’s going to happen ?”
قال ماكس:" تحدث إلي أيها الولد الذكي", " ما الذي سيحدث الآن؟".
George did not say anything .
لم ينبس جورج بكلمة.
“I’ll tell you,” Max said. “We’re going to kill a Swede. Do you know a big Swede named Ole Anderson ?”
قال ماكس: " سأخبرك" "سنقتل سويدي(رجل شبيه
بالفاكهة الصفراء الداكنةمن الداخل وقشرتها بنية). هل تعرف سويدي كبير
اسمها ولي أندرسون؟"
“Yes .”
"نعم"
“He comes here to eat every night, don’t he ?”
"يأتي يوميا هنا لتناول الطعام, أليس كذلك؟"
“Sometimes he comes here .”
"أحيانا يأتي هنا".
“He comes here at six o’clock, don’t he ?”
يأتي هنا الساعة السادسة, أليس كذلك؟"
“If he comes .”
"هذا إذا جاء" .
“We know all that, bright boy,” Max said. “Talk about something else. Ever go to the movies ?”
قال ماكس:" نعرف كل شيء, أيها الولد الذكي". " تحدث عن أي شيء آخر. هل تذهب للسينما؟"
“Once in a while .”

“You ought to go to the movies more. The movies are fine for a bright boy like you .”

“Shut up,” said Al from the kitchen. “You talk too goddamn much .”
قال آل من المطبخ :" إخرس". " أنت تثرثر كثيرا أيها الملعون"
“Well, I got to keep bright boy amused. Don’t I, bright boy ?”
"حسنا, علي أدع الولد الذكي مستمتعا. أليس كذلك, أيها الولد الذكي؟"
“You talk too damn much,” Al said. “The nigger and my
bright boy are amused by themselves. I got them tied up like a couple
of girl friends in the convent .”
قال آل:"أنت تثرثر كثير أيها الملعون" .الزنجي والرجل الذكي منبهرين بانفسهم.سأجعلهم يرتبطون ببعظهم كصديقتان في مدرسة الراهبات"
“I suppose you were in a convent .”
"أتوقع إنك كنت في مدرسة الرهبات"
“You never know .”
" لن تعرف"
“You were in a kosher convent. That’s where you were .”
"كنت في مدرسة راهبان ملتزمة بالقانون.ذلك المكان الذي أنت فيه."
George looked up at the clock .
نظر جورج إلى الساعة
“If anybody comes in you tell them the cook is off, and if
they keep after it, you tell them you’ll go back and cook yourself. Do
you get that, bright boy ?”
إذا جاء أحد اخبره أن الطعام قد نفذ,وإذا بقوا بعد ذلك اخبرهم أنك ستعد الطعام بنفسك. هل فهمت ذلك؟" "
“All right,” George said. “What you going to do with us afterward ?”
قال جورج: " حسنا". "مإذا ستفعل بنا بعد ذلك؟"
“That’ll depend,” Max said. “That’s one of those things you never know at the time .”
قال ماكس:" حسب الظروف"."ذلك واحد من الأشياء التي لا تعرفوها الآن"
George looked up at the clock. It was a quarter past six. The door from the street opened. A streetcar motorman came in .

“Hello, George,” he said. “Can I get supper ?”

“Sam’s gone out,” George said. “He’ll be back in about half an hour .”
قال جورج:"خرج سام"."سيرجع في غضون نصف ساعة."
“I’d better go up the street,” the motorman said. George looked at the clock. It was twenty minutes, past six .
قال سائق السيارة" ينبغي ان اذهب للشارع" نظر جورج إلى الساعة كأنت تشيرإلى السادسة و ست دقائق.
“That was nice, bright boy,” Max said. “You’re a regular little gentleman .”
قال ماكس:" هذا رائعا أيعا الولد الذكي"." أنت طبيعي مثل رجل انيق"
“He knew I’d blow his head off,” Al said from the kitchen .
قال آل: من المطبخ" انه يعرف باني قد اقطع راسه"
“No,” said Max. “It ain’t that. Bright boy is nice. He’s a nice boy. I like him .”
قال ماكس:" لا". " ليس كذلك إن الولد الذكي رائع جدا وأنا أحبه"
At six-fifty-five George said: “He’s not coming .”
في تمام الساعة السادسة وخمس وخمسون قال جورج:"لن يأتي."
Two other people had been in the lunchroom. Once George
had gone out to the kitchen and made a ham-and-egg sandwich “to go”
that a man wanted to take with him. Inside the kitchen he saw Al, his
derby hat tipped back, sitting on a stool beside the wicket with the muzzle of a sawed-off shotgun resting on the ledge.
Nick and the cook were back to back in the corner, a towel tied in each
of their mouths. George had cooked the sandwich, wrapped it up in oiled
paper, put it in a bag, brought it in, and the man had paid for it and
gone out .
دخل رجلان آخران إلى المطعم بينما كان جورج
ذاهبا إلى المطبخ لإعداد سندويتشا من لحم الخنزير والبيض "ليذهب" للرجل
الذي أاراد أن يأخذه معه.شاهد آل داخل المطبخ يحيه بقبعته اللبادية
وهوويجلس على كرسي بجانب باب المطبخ كما رأى الجزء الناتىء من فوهمة
المسدس الصغير موضوع على الرّف. في الزاوية كان نيك والطباخ ظهورهم
لبعض, و هناك منشفة مربوطة على افواههما.
“Bright boy can do everything,” Max said. “He can cook and everything. You’d make some girl a nice wife, bright boy .”
قال ماكس:"الولد الذكي بإمكانه عمل أي شيء", يستطيع أان يطهو أي شيء. بإمكانك أن تجعل الفتاة زوجة جميلة أيها الولد الذكي"
“Yes?” George said, “Your friend, Ole Anderson, isn’t going to come .”
قال جورج:" نعم", صديقك أولي أندرسون لن يأتي"
“We’ll give him ten minutes,” Max said .
قال ماكس:" سوف نعطيه 10 دقائق"
Max watched the mirror and the clock. The hands of the clock marked seven o’clock, and then five minutes past seven .
شاهد ماكس المرآة والساعة. عقارب الساعة تشير إلى السابعة.
“Come on, Al,” said Max. “We better go. He’s not coming .”
قال ماكس:" تعال يا آل". "علينا الذهاب . لن يأتي"
“Better give him five minutes,” Al said from the kitchen .
قال آل من المطبخ :" يجب ان نعطيه 5 دقائق"
In the five minutes a man came in, and George explained that the cook was sick .
في غضون خمس دقائق جاء رجل, وقال جورج: الطباخ كان مريض.
“Why the hell don’t you get another cook?” the man asked. “Aren’t you running a lunch-counter?” He went out .
سأل الرجل:" لمإذا بحق الجحيم لا يوجد لديك طاهي آخر؟" ," أليس لديك مطعم لتناول الوجبات الخفيفة؟" ثم خرج.
“Come on, Al,” Max said .
قال ماكس: " تعال يا آل"
“What about the two bright boys and the nigger ?”
" ومإذا بشأن الولدان الذكيان والزنجي؟"
“They’re all right .”
" هم على حق"
“You think so ?”
"أتعتقد ذلك؟"
“Sure. We’re through with it .”
"بالتأكيد. ونحن كذلك"
“I don’t like it,” said Al. “It’s sloppy. You talk too much .”
قال آل: " لا أحب ذلك"," يا للقذارة. أنت تتحدث كثيرا"
“Oh, what the hell,” said Max. “We got to keep amused, haven’t we ?”

“You talk too much, all the same,” Al said. He came out
from the kitchen. The cut-off barrels of the shotgun made a slight
bulge under the waist of his too tight-fitting overcoat. He
straightened his coat with his gloved hands .

خرج من المطبخ. كان كعب المسدس منتفخا عند خصره بسبب معطفه الضيق. ثم عدل

“So long, bright boy,” he said to George. “You got a lot of luck .”

“That’s the truth,” Max said. “You ought to play the races, bright boy .”
قال ماكس:" هذه هي الحقيقة". "عليك أن تشارك بالسباقات أيها الولد الذكي."
The two of them went out the door. George watched them,
through the window, pass under the arc-light and across the street. In
their tight overcoats and derby hats they looked like a vaudeville
team. George went back through the swinging door into the kitchen and
untied Nick and the cook .
خرج كلاهما من الباب.وشاهدهما جورج من خلال
النافذة يمشون تحت قوس الضوء ويقطعون الشارع. كانوا في معاطفهم الضيقة
وقبعاتهم اللبادية يبدون كافريق مسرحيه هزلية.ذهب جورج من خلال الباب
المتأرجح إلى المطبخ وفك رباط نيك والطاهي.
“I don’t want any more of that,” said Sam, the cook. “I don’t want any more of that .”
قال سام(الطاهي):" أنا لا أريد المزيد من ذلك," ."لا أريد المزيد من ذلك".
Nick stood up. He had never had a towel in his mouth before .
وقف نيك. لم يوضع في فمه منشفة من قبل.
“Say,” he said. “What the hell?” He was trying to swagger it off .
قال :" أقول"." اللعنة". حاول أن يرميها بعيدا
“They were going to kill Ole Anderson,” George said. “They were going to shoot him when he came in to eat .”
قال جورج:" يريدون قتل أولي أندرسون". "يريدون إطلاق الرصاص عليه عندما يأتي لتناول الطعام هنا."
“Ole Anderson ?”
"أولي أندرسون؟"
“Sure .”
" بالتأكيد"
The cook felt the corners of his mouth with his thumbs .
تحسس الطاهي زوايا فمه بإبهاميه
“They all gone?” he asked .
سأل :" هل ذهبوا؟"
“Yeah,” said George. “They’re gone now .”
قال جورج:" نعم","جميعهم ذهبوا الآن"
“I don’t like it,” said the cook. “I don’t like any of it at all ”
قال الطاهي :" لم أحب ذلك"." لم احب ذلك ابدا"
“Listen,” George said to Nick. “You better go see Ole Anderson .”
قال جورج: لنيك" اسمع"." يجب ان تذهب وترى أولي أندرسون"
“All right .”
"حسنا"
“You better not have anything to do with it at all,” Sam, the cook, said. “You better stay way out of it .”
قال سام (الطاهي)" يجب ان لا تتدخل بهذا الموضوع"." يجب ان تبقى بعيدا عن هذا الموضوع"
“Don’t go if you don’t want to,” George said .
قال جورج: "لا تذهب إن كنت لا ترغب"
“Mixing up in this ain’t going to get you anywhere,” the cook said. “You stay out of it .”
قال الطاهي:" تدخلك في هذا, أليس سيؤذيك"." لا تتدخل في ذلك"
I’ll go see him,” Nick said to George. “Where does he live ?”
قال نيك لجورج :" سأذهب لرؤيته". " أين يعيش؟"
The cook turned away .
إستدار الطاهي بعيدا.
“Little boys always know what they want to do,” he said .
قال"الأولاد الصغار يعرفون ماذا ينبغي عليهم فعله."
“He lives up at Hirsch’s rooming-house,” George said to Nick .
قال جورج لنيك :" إنه يعيش في بيت هيرسك للغرف المفروشة"
“I’ll go up there .”
" سأذهب إلى هناك"
Outside the arc-light shone through the bare branches of a
tree. Nick walked up the street beside the car-tracks and turned at the
next arc-light down a side-street. Three houses up the street was
Hirsch’s rooming-house. Nick walked up the two steps and pushed the
bell. A woman came to the door .
في خارج شاهد قوس الضوء من خلال غضون
الأشجار العارية.مشى نيك بجانب أثر عجلات السيارات ثم إستدار إلى بإتجاه
الضوء. كان هناك ثلاث منازل في الشارع الذي به منزل هيرسك للفرف
المفرشة.خطى نيك خطوتين وقرع الجرس. فخرجت إمرأة.
“Is Ole Anderson here ?”
" هل أولي أندرسون موجود؟"
“Do you want to see him ?”
" هل تريد أن تراه"
“Yes, if he’s in .”
"نعم, إذا كان موجودا"
Nick followed the woman up a flight of stairs and back to the end of a corridor. She knocked on the door .
تبع نيك المرأة على السلم المعلق وأتجه للخلف إلى نهاية الممر. ثم دقت الباب.
“Who is it ?”
" من؟"
“It’s somebody to see you, Mr. Anderson,” the woman said .
قالت المرأة :" هناك رجلا يريد رؤيتك يا سيد أندرسون"
“It’s Nick Adams .”
" إنه نيك آدمز"
“Come in .”
" أدخل"
Nick opened the door and went into the room. Ole Anderson
was lying on the bed with all his clothes on. He had been a heavyweight
prizefighter and he was too long for the bed. He lay with his head on
two pillows. He did not look at Nick .
فتح نيك الباب ودخل الغرفة. كان أولي أندرسون
ممددا على سريره ولابسه جميع ملابسه. هو حاصل على جائزة الملاكم للوزن
الثقيل وكان طويلا جدا والرير قصير, وكان تحت رأسة مخدتان ولم ينظر إلى
نيك.
“What was it?” he asked .
سأل" ما ألامر؟"
“I was up at Henry’s,” Nick said, “and two fellows came in
and tied up me and the cook, and they said they were going to kill you
.”
قال نيك " كنت عند هنري"," حيث جاء رفيقان وأوثقانا انا والطباخ وقالوا انهم يريدون قتلك"
It sounded silly when he said it. Ole Anderson said nothing .
بدا وكان القول ساذجا عندما قالها, وأولي لم يقل شيئا.
“They put us out in the kitchen,” Nick went on. “They were going to shoot you when you came in to supper .”
تابع نيك حديثه" وضعونا في المطبخ"," كان يريدون قتلك عندما تأتي لتناول الطعام
Ole Anderson looked at the wall and did not say anything .
نظر أولي أندرسون إلى الجدار ولم ينبس ببنت شفه
“George thought I better come and tell you about it .”
" اعتقد جورج انه ينبغي علي القدوم واخبرك"
“There isn’t anything I can do about it,” Ole Anderson said .
قال أولي"لا استطيع عمل شيء حيال ذلك"
“I’ll tell you what they were like .”
"سأخبرك بأوصافهما"
“I don’t want to know what they were like,” Ole Anderson
said. He looked at the wall. “Thanks for coming to tell me about it .”
" قال أولي أندرسون " لا أريد معرفة أوصافهما" ثم نظر إلى الجدار" شكرا لك لانك اتيت لاخباري بذلك"
“That’s all right .”
"حسنا"
Nick looked at the big man lying on the bed .
نظر نيك إلى الرجل الضخم الممدد على الفراش.
“Don’t you want me to go and see the police ?”
" ألا تريد مني الذهاب إلى الشرطة واخبارهم بذلك؟"
“No,” Ole Anderson said. “That wouldn’t do any good .”
قال أولي أندرسون" لا" ."لن يأتي ذلك بخير"
“Isn’t there something I could do ?”
"هل استطيع عمل أي شيء؟"
“No. There ain’t anything to do .”
" لا. لا يوجد شيء ليعمله"
“Maybe it was just a bluff .”
"ربما كأنت خدعة"
“No. It ain’t just a bluff .”
"لا. ليست خدعة"
Ole Anderson rolled over toward the wall .
استدار أولي أندرسون إلى الجدار.
“The only thing is,” he said, talking toward the wall, “I just can’t make up my mind to go out. I been here all day .”
قال وهو باتجاه الحائط" الشيء الحيد هو" "لا افكر بالخروج لذل بقيت هنا طوال اليوم"
“Couldn’t you get out of town ?”
" ألا تريد الخروج من المدينة؟"
“No,” Ole Anderson said. “I’m through with all that running around .”
قال أندرسون"لا" ."لم يعد يهمني ما يجري حولي"
He looked at the wall .
نظر إلى الجدار.
“There ain’t anything to do now .”
" لا يوجد شيء يمكن عمله الآن."
“Couldn’t you fix it up some way ?”
"أليس من الممكن اصلاح الأمر؟"
“No. I got in wrong.” He talked in the same flat voice.
“There ain’t anything to do. After a while I’ll make up my mind to go
out .”
تحدث بنفس نبرة الصوت" لا لقد وقعت بالخطأ" ." لا يمكن فعل أي شيء. بعد قليل سأعتزم الخروج"
“I better go back and see George,” Nick said .
قال نيك:" ينبغي علي العودة ورؤية جورج"
“So long,” said Ole Anderson. He did not look toward Nick. “Thanks for coming around .”
قال أولي أندرسون بدون أن ينظر إلى نيك" تاخرت"."شكرا لقدومك"
Nick went out. As he shut the door he saw Ole Anderson with all his clothes on, lying on the bed looking at the wall .
خرج نيك من الغرفة وعندما اغلق الباب رأى أولي أندرسون بكامل ملابسه ممددا على السرير ينظر إلى الحائط.
“He’s been in his room all day,” the landlady said
downstairs. “I guess he don’t feel well. I said to him: ‘Mr. Anderson,
you ought to go out and take a walk on a nice fall day like this,’ but
he didn’t feel like it .”
قالت السيدة بألاسفل: " لم يخرج من غرفته طوال
اليوم". أعتقد انه ليس على مايرام. أخبرته يا سيد أندرسون ينبغي عليك
الخروج والمشي في مثل هذا اليوم الخريفي الرائع"
“He doesn’t want to go out .”
"لم يرغب بالخروج"
“I’m sorry he don’t feel well,” the woman said. “He’s an awfully nice man. He was in the ring, you know .”
قالت المرأة :" إنني متألمه على حالته"
“I know it .”
" أعرف ذلك"
“You’d never know it except from the way his face is,” the woman said .
قالت المرأة :" أنت لم تعرف إلا من خلال وجهه"
They stood talking just inside the street door. “He’s just as gentle .”
وقفا يتحدثان في داخل بوابة المنزل." انه رجل انيق"
“Well, good night, Mrs. Hirsch,’ Nick said .
قال نيك " حسنا, طابت ليلتك سيدة هيرسك"
“I’m not Mrs. Hirsch,” the woman said. “She owns the place. I just look after it for her. I’m Mrs. Bell .”
قالت المرأة : " انا لست السيدة هيسترك."هي تملك المكان وأنا أديره لها. أنا السيدة بيل"
“Well, good night, Mrs. Bell,” Nick said .
قال نيك :" حسنا سيدة بيل " طابت ليلتك"
“Good night,” the woman said .
قالت المراة :"طابت ليلتك"
Nick walked up the dark street to the corner under the
arc-light, and then along the car-tracks to Henry’s eating-house.
George was inside, back of the counter .
مشى نيك في الشارع المظلم إلى الزواية تحت قوس الضوء, ومن ثم تتبع أثار عجلات السيارات إلى مطبخ هنري.كان جورج بالداخل خلف المنضدة.
“Did you see Ole ?”
"هل رأيت أولي؟"
“Yes,” said Nick. “He’s in his room and he won’t go out .”
قال نيك " نعم". انه في غرفة ةلم يبرحها ابدا"
The cook opened the door from the kitchen when he heard Nick’s voice .
فتح الطاهي باب المطبخ وخرج عندما سمع صوت نيك.
“I don’t even listen to it,” he said and shut the door .
"أنا حتى لم أسمعك" قال ذلك ثم أغلق الباب.
“Did you tell him about it?” George asked .
سأل جورج "هل أخبرت بما حدث؟"
“Sure. I told him but he knows what it’s all about .”
" بالتأكيد أخبرته ولكنه كان على علم بما جرى"
“What’s he going to do ?”
" ما الذي سيفعله؟"
“Nothing .”
" لا شيء"
“They’ll kill him .”
" سيقتلونه"
“I guess they will .”
" أعتقد ذلك"
“He must have got mixed up in something in Chicago .”
"لا بد إنه تورط بشيء ما في شيكاغو"
“I guess so,” said Nick .
قال نيك: " ربما"
“It’s a hell of a thing !”
" إنها لعنة شيء ما"
“It’s an awful thing,” Nick said .
قال نيك : " إنه شيء مرعب"
They did not say anything. George reached down for a towel and wiped the counter .
لم ينبسا بكلمة. قام جورج بالبحث عن منشفة ليمسح بها المنضدة.
“I wonder what he did?” Nick said .
قال نيك: "أتعجب مما فعل؟"
“Double-crossed somebody. That’s what they kill them for .”
" خيانة أحدهم. ذلك هو السبب الذي يريدون قتله من أجله"
“I’m going to get out of this town,” Nick said .
قال نيك: " سأخرج من هذه البلدة"
“Yes,” said George. “That’s a good thing to do .”
قال جورج: "نعم", " هذا افضل شيء تفعله"
“I can’t stand to think about him waiting in the room and knowing he’s going to get it. It’s too damned awful .”
" لا أستطيع تحمل فكرة إنه ينتظر في غرفته ويعلم بأنه سيموت. إن هذا شيء مرعب"
“Well,” said George, “you better not think about it .”
قال جورج: " حسنا" . " من الأفضل أن لا تفكر بهذا الأمر
