what is the novel?
its a work of fiction not less than fifty thousand word writen in prose but its also attemp to convey imaginatively some circumistances significant enough ti have an interst for the people who will read it.
its the printed contents of this volume i hold in my hand or its a transaction whaich takes palce between the reader and the book

studying novel
the argument so far implies that the novel needs attentive readers .
individual novels need to be read according to the rules and conventions which thw writer has established for that particular book
the novel may seem the most modern form of literture, such as the epic and drama, which reach back to the beginning of literary consicousnessof the western world
the novel emerged once more in england at the beginnig of the eighteen century in the form of fictional imititaion of tha daiaries autobiographies, travellers tales and the biographies of crimenal which were
common forms of prose litreture in earlier years
eventoday among religious or other groups whose aim to change lives, the value of the testimony of pentints is not forgotten.
the developement of the novel is a european phenomenon of considrable complixity among the immediate predeccessors of cervantes's novel in spanish litreture
a quite different kind of fiction was intitated by an english printer "samuel richadson", whose first novel "pamela " appeared in 1740.this novel took the form of series of letters exchanged mainly betwwen yhe heroine, pamela.and hee parents
this preliminary sketch of how english novel began has shown how diverse its antecedent this simplest approach to any example

a thematic approach
one way of reducing the dentisty of material which is offered by novel in english from the eighteenth to
the twentith century is to adopt a thematic approach to its study
a formal approach
yet another way of stdying the novel is to pay attention to its formal element
wolfgange iser described the novel as a system of perspective design to transmit the individiuality
of the author vision
as a rule there ara four main perspectives those of the narretor, the character ,the plot, and the fictitous reader
the historical approach
to build up a sense of the historical development of the novel is a legitimate and desirable aim for student
at an elementary stage of our study there may be some point in disregarding the differences of history which distinguish one work from another
**********************************************
using the handbook
handbook can give general hints for approaching study of novel , the student knowledges debend upon his understandung on individual texts
understanding the novels can come throught a close stude of tha language of the novel
the best way to use handbook is to read it carfully and to aplly to one of section in chapter 3 (theme) the methods of study which have been out of cahpter 4(techenque)
chapter 2 is essentil preparation for capter 4but it also lays the foundation for the historical approach to study the novel
